Pure cinema both from the dramatic match point which saw both
Daniil Medvedev and
Corentin Moutet run around from net to baseline and back again down to the Russian deciding to lose his mind post match hurling racquets and water bottles. Their
DC Open Washington clash had it all.
Albeit Moutet won in the end 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Moutet ironically had an MTO in the second set which perhaps would've given the impetus to Medvedev if it wasn't for the fact that the Russian and French tandem were hurled off court due to lightning.
A pretty rare tennis occurrence but one that saw multiple matches including Medvedev-Moutet and De Minaur-Nakashima decidingly taken off court, they returned and Medvedev rightfully was fired up. But in the wrong way.
He was soon defeated by Moutet and decided to go to the net without his racquet as he hurled it barely missing not only the umpire's chair but also members of the crowd in the front row and on this episode of Medvedev cinema, it wasn't only the dramatic match point and the racquet that did not leave the stadium.
But it didn't stop there as Medvedev started hurling his water bottle in his bag onto the floor trying to break it in sheer frustration as Moutet on the otherhand was purely soaking up the emotion.
He lay on the court with his racquet unlike Medvedev and took it all in. He now faces Alex de Minaur or Brandon Nakashima in the semi-finals. Both players were also part of the lightning delay albeit the Australian was up early instead of being in the latter stages like the Moutet v Medvedev clash was.
Medvedev now moves onto Canada but as his unlucky season continues Moutet continues to grow and like Alexander Bublik, it is no longer just a showman act and is producing some epic results.
