Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman had an emotional moment on the court during his final appearance. The 32-year-old earlier announced that he would retire from professional tennis after taking part in the ongoing Argentina Open.
Schwartzman’s journey in the competition ended on Thursday as he lost in round 16 to Spain’s Pedro Martinez in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2. In a video that was shared on the social media platform X, Schwartzman can be seen wiping off tears before the last point of his career as the crowd chanted his name.
Schwartzman finished his career with four titles at the highest level. He managed to reach his best spot in the ATP rankings in 2020 when he climbed to eighth. His last title also came in 2021 in Buenos Aires, where he defeated fellow countryman Francisco Cerundolo in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2. His first title came way back in 2016 in Istanbul, where he emerged victorious after beating Grigor Dimitrov in the final with a score of 6–7, 7–6, 6–0.
Schwartzman’s record while playing in major events has not been that great. His best performance in a Grand Slam came in the 2020 French Open, where his journey finally came to an end after losing in the semifinal to former world number one Spain’s Rafael Nadal in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3, 7-6.
Talking about his career after the match, Schwartzman stated that he is happy with what he achieved and also revealed that he has remained ‘exhausted’. “I understood my body, I understood my head,” he said while talking to ATP. “I knew I had been exhausted for a while and that I couldn’t keep up what I had always managed to do... I achieved much more than I ever dreamed of.”
Before Diego Schwartzman played the final point of his career, the crowd in Buenos Aires was chanting his name.
