Germany’s
Alexander Zverev was involved in a heated exchange
of words with the chair umpire after a controversial call during the Hamburg
Open. The 27-year-old booked his place in the competition's quarterfinal after beating Hugo Gaston with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
In a video posted on a social media platform, Zverev can be seen involved in a heated exchange with the chair umpire, who apparently missed a double bounce that led to the French player winning a point. The German can be heard saying, “There is no way that ball didn’t bounce twice.”
The incident, however, did not impact the match. Zverev booked his place in the last eight, where he will face Zhang Zhizhen. Zhang Zhizhen booked his
place in the quarterfinal after beating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in straight sets
with a score of 6-1, 7-6. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two in
professional tennis.
For Zverev, this tournament is an opportunity to return to form
after a rather disappointing Wimbledon, where he was knocked out after losing in
the round of 16 to America’s Taylor Fritz in a five-set thrilling contest with
a score of 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. That result was instead surprising, not only because the current world number four lost after taking a set lead but also because, overall, the Hamburg-born star is having a very good season.
Earlier this year, Zverev played in the final of the French Open, where he lost to Spain’s young tennis star Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thrilling contest with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Before that, in the Australian
Open, he lost in the semifinal, again after taking two sets lead to Russia’s
5-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3. Before Wimbledon, Zverev’s last appearance came in the
Halle Open, where he was knocked out of the competition after losing in the
semifinal to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz with a score of 7-6, 6-4.
