A curious
situation unfolded in the match between Andy Murray and the second seed Grigor
Dimitrov at the 2024
Brisbane International. The Bulgarian secured the victory
with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in a match where he broke four strings and even
managed to win points despite issues with his rackets. Dimitrov damaged four
rackets.
The former
world No. 3 mentioned in the on-court interview that the issue might be due to
the high humidity in the Australian city. However, similar situations have not
been observed in other matches of the tournament, so it's quite possible that
the problem was caused by a bad batch of strings.
“Grigor Dimitrov
broke FOUR strings in his match against Murray!”
Dimitrov aims
to confirm his outstanding 2023 season
The
Bulgarian star concluded 2023 with one of the best seasons of his career at the
age of 32. Dimitrov has finished within the top 30 for the past 11 consecutive
seasons, although last year, he achieved his best ranking since reaching No. 3
in 2017 when he won the ATP Finals. Additionally, he boasted a record of 41-21
(66%), second only to his tremendous 2017 performance.
His last
match of the season was at Paris-Bercy, where he faced Djokovic in what turned
out to be a notable tournament for Dimitrov. This time, the victory over Murray
in Brisbane was probably even more special, considering their encounter in 2013
in the final of the same tournament (Dimitrov's first in his career). However,
in that year, the defending champion Murray secured the title.
In the
second round, Dimitrov awaits his opponent, who will emerge from the winner of
the match between qualifier Li Tu (No. 206) and the German Daniel Altmaier (No.
55). Following Brisbane, Dimitrov plans to travel directly to Melbourne to
prepare for his participation in the Australian Open.
