Holger Rune had a bizarre interaction during his opening round match at the
Shanghai Masters with the chair umpire as he hilariously mentioned his mother's smoking habit while complaining about air conditioning and an odor in the stadium.
Rune received a bye and faced a crunch clash with Matteo Berrettini in the second round. He edged through 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a thrilling comeback win sitting up a tie with Jiri Lehecka in the process.
The rain-delayed match was one of a leading number of casualties before it was finally played under the roof on Stadium court on Monday. This closed roof caused a huge amount of humidity. This led to a bizarre pungent odor as it seemingly intensified due to a lack of ventilation.
Rune hilariously complained that the odor smelt like his mother puffing on cigarettes. "What smell?" the chair umpire was heard asking Rune. "It’s just around here," the tennis player responded, sniffing. "I’m used to a smoking mom," Holger Rune added, laughing.
