Daniil Medvedev slammed the
Australian Open crowd during his final match with Rafael Nadal, describing them as ‘idiots’ with ‘no brains.’
Nadal began to find his rhythm in the third set and
eventually took the set 6-4 as a packed Rod Laver Arena crowd cheered him on. As the crowd rallied behind the 35-year-old, Medvedev was
subjected to occasional boos and jeers with his winners not applauded in
the same way as Nadal’s. The chair umpire also had to remind the crowd not to shout out before players serve or during first and second serves, with Medvedev seemingly the subject of more taunts than his opponent.
Medvedev fumed at the crowd complaining to the umpire:
"They are idiots. No brains, empty brains. Probably their life must be very bad."
He continued to complain to the umpire as the match went on:
"Please is not enough. They are idiots. With idiots, please does not work. I came to win this match and I am happy that I managed to do it. That’s the only choice when you are booed between first and second serves."
Medvedev faced similar issues during his match against Kyrgios when he explained that the crowd probably has a low IQ. That certainly did not help his case.
