Rafael Nadal called time on his 2021 season early after a persistent foot injury continued to affect his play negatively.
The Spaniard missed significant chunks of time ever since losing to Novak Djokovic at the French Open choosing to skip the Olympic Games and Wimbledon. He named 'prolonging his career' as the motivation behind the decision but since then it's become clear that it was the foot that was giving him too much pain while playing.
Nadal hoped to be able to nurse it back to health over the summer but when he returned to Washington it became clear that not much has changed. The Spaniard was still negatively affected and after consultation with doctors, he decided to end his 2021 season early. His coach Carlos Moya revealed the team was unsure how to proceed but images of Nadal with crutches soon started circulating.
Nadal seems to have undergone surgery in hopes of finally fixing an issue that dates back to 2005. After seeing him crutches many speculate whether he would be able to make it back in time for the
Australian Open but he seems to be on schedule. A new video shows the Spaniard practising on the courts of his Tennis Academy. Check it out.
