The Barcelona Open is the second tournament that Rafael Nadal has won the most times, only behind the 14 titles he has won at Roland Garros. The Spaniard has won the ATP 500 12 times (2005-2009, 2011-2013, 2016-2018 and 2021) and hopes to give himself perhaps one last chance to lift the trophy in Barcelona this year.
There will be an all-star line-up with the presence of two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, if he recovers from the injury that prevented him from being at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, Casper Ruud, clay court specialist and finalist of the last two editions at Roland Garros, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Roland Garros finalist in 2021, two-time champion in Monte Carlo and three-time finalist in Barcelona, Andrey Rublev, who won in Monte Carlo last year, and Alex de Miñaur, who had two match balls against Alcaraz in the semifinals of the Conde de Godo in 2022.
Nadal has played just three matches since the US Open 2022, all of them at the Brisbane Tournament he played in the first week of this year. He has not competed on clay for almost two years but we all know he is the best ever on the surface.
Today, the 22-time Grand Slam champion has trained on the court of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell-Trofeo Conde de Godó that bears his name, and is scheduled to do the same tomorrow at 17:00 local time.
The Barcelona Open 2024 takes place next week, after the end of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, in the week of April 15-21, and the draw will be held next Saturday 13th, when we will know if Rafa will be present and we will see who will be in the draw if and when his participation is finally confirmed.
