America’s tennis star Sebastian
Korda showcased his talent during the quarterfinal of the
Shanghai Masters
against fellow countryman
Ben Shelton.
The 23-year-old registered a
surprising win in the last-eight where he defeated the current world number 20 with
a score of 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 on Thursday.
During that match, Korda returned
a serve clocked at 222kmh from Shelton, much to the delight of the fans sitting
in the arena.
Korda is now set to face off
Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the semifinal of the event on Friday.
The result will be a big boost for
the Florida-born who has had a rather disappointing year in big tournaments
this year.
Korda participated in the main
round of all Grand Slams but managed to qualify for the third round or
beyond on just one occasion.
His most impressive outing came in
the Australian Open where he had to retire in the quarterfinal against Russia’s
Karen Khachanov. The game ended with a score of 7-6, 6-3, 3-0.
It will be the sixth time when
both players will face off on the court. In the previous five meetings, Khachanov
has a slight edge with three wins compared to Korda’s two victories.
Their most recent meeting took
place in the semifinal of the Zhuhai Open last month where the Russian tennis
star came out on top with a score of 7-5, 6-4.
