WTA Finals is set to move to Saudi Arabia from 2024, according
to tennis journalist Jon Wertheim.
The last big event of the women’s tennis calendar year will
be played in Cancun, Mexico from October 29 to November 05.
As per tennis journalist Wertheim, the tournament is set to
move to the Middle Eastern country in 2024 for three years. It is not clear
when the announcement will be made.
Last year, the title was won by France’s Caroline Garcia who
defeated the current world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets with a
score of 7-6, 6-4.
So far, five players have already qualified for the mega-event
including the likes of Sabalenka, America’s young sensation Coco Gauff, Jessica
Pegula, Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova, and Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur.
Gauff booked her place in the competition after winning the US
Open — which was her maiden Grand Slam title — after beating Sabalenka in the
final with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Vondrousova won the Wimbledon
earlier this year after beating Jabeur in the final in straight sets with a
score of 6-4, 6-4.
Pegula is the only player out of
the five qualified for the event who has not featured in the semifinal of the
Grand Slam.
