Novak Djokovic came from a set down to see off Alexei Popyrin yesterday to reach the Last 16 at
Wimbledon where he faces a crunch clash with Holger Rune for a spot in the Quarter-Finals. Similar to England who sealed their progression through.
But most on Centre Court last night were more engrossed with the goings on in Germany than they were about Djokovic playing who they got their tickets to see.
Djokovic knew this and joked about it post match. "It felt like for a set and a half the crowd wanted to understand what the score was in the football match, did England win?"
To which he was told they did and superbly responded: "That's why you guys stayed." England saw off Switzerland in dramatic fashion winning on penalties and will now take on the Netherlands with the match interrupted at one point with fans cheering that England ahd won.
Initially it was meant to be Djokovic and also Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray in mixed doubles in that prime time slot. But the latter withdrew from the tournament which stirred debate. But Djokovic at least saw the funny side that the fans cared more about the football than his tennis match.
"A very challenging match, I think mentally as well, to hang in there," said Djokovic.
"I was not allowed to have too big concentration lapses. I think I've done well in that regard. That was one of the best tie-breaks I've played this year, that's for sure."
"I didn't expect anything less than what we experienced on the court today from Alexei," Djokovic added.
"With that serve and powerful forehand, he's dangerous on any surface.
"I knew he was in form and he was going to come out believing he can win. He was the better player in the first set. I think I played a good second and third and the fourth was anybody's game.
