Novak Djokovic may feel aggrieved to have missed a 429th week as World No.1 as
Jannik Sinner's points won't be retroactively subtracted from the rankings.
Sinner of course only just became World No.1 during the recent clay court season so Sinner having those points removed as if it was still Indian Wells would've given Djokovic another week to add to the history books.
But the ATP have confirmed that Sinner will reach 10 weeks as World No.1 and Djokovic won't get his 429th as it will be removed over the next week instead of being looked back on. Prominent journalist Ben Rothenberg got an answer and said: "Following Monday's decision, the Indian Wells points come off as of this week's ranking (vs a retroactive re-running/re-publishing of the rankings going back to March."
Sinner first failed a test on March 10 and eight days later his second sample also tested positive. He was provisionally suspended after each positive test. He appealed on both occasions and was allowed to continue playing. He was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing as the ITIA accepted his explanation.
But the ITIA statement added: “Sinner’s results, prize money and ranking points from the ATP Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells, where the player tested positive in competition for clostebol, are disqualified.” This meant theories started about whether Djokovic would get another week but it seems he won't with Sinner set to lose it after this week instead which will just heighten the World No.1 race.
