America’s Frances Tiafoe and Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo have now been included in the Team World for the 2024 edition of the Laver Cup. This year’s edition will be played from September 20 to 22 where some of the top players will be divided into two teams — Europe and World — as they will fight for the ultimate prize.
Team World has now announced the addition of two new players, America’s Tiafoe and Chile’s Tabilo, to the squad. They will join the likes of Australia’s Alex de Minaur, America’s Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul. The announcement was made on the official page of the Laver Cup on social media platform X.
Former world number one John McEnroe, who is the Team World captain, was quoted on the official website of the competition where he expressed his excitement after having more quality players in the contingent. “I’m thrilled to have Frances back on the team in Berlin,” he said. “He’s proven he can hold his own against the world’s best players. He’s a big personality and brings a great vibe to the team, whether he’s on the court or on the bench. Tabilo has demonstrated he is capable of beating the best players in the game on all surfaces this year. He should inject some fresh energy to what is an experienced and successful core team.”
Tiafoe and Tabilo also excitement and pride in representing Team World at the mega-event. “I am excited to be back on Team World and looking forward to another great week with my teammates and Johnny Mac,” said Tiafoe. “It is a great honor to represent Team World in Berlin and I thank Captain McEnroe for selecting me,” said Tabilo. “I will play whatever role I can, on and off the court, to contribute to a win.”
They will face a very tough Team Europe side, which will consist of the likes of Norway’s Casper Ruud, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, legendary Rafael Nadal, Spain’s young sensation Carlos Alcaraz, Germany’s Alexandar Zverev and Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. This will be the seventh edition of the competition. In the previous six editions, Team Europe had an edge as they won on four occasions. However, Team World will be coming into the competition full of confidence as they lifted the title in the last two editions.
