Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic is among four big players who are set to miss the 2024 Laver Cup. The upcoming edition of the team-based competition will be played from September 20 to 22 in Berlin, and some of the top players will represent Team Europe and Team World.
One of the big-name players who is sure to miss the event will be Serbia’s Djokovic. The reason behind his absence from the event is not yet apparent. However, Djokovic will not be the only big-name player who will not be part of Team Europe in the ongoing campaign. Former world number one Andy Murray will also not participate in the competition. The 37-year-old has struggled with fitness concerns this season and recently announced that he will retire from professional tennis after the upcoming Paris Olympics, beginning on July 26.
Another big-name player who will miss out on the upcoming mega-event is Russia’s Andrey Rublev, who has also not been selected for the team. The 26-year-old has recently struggled with form and fitness, which might have contributed to the decision.
This season, The Team Europe will feature some of the big-name players to compete against the Team World. The likes of current world number two and four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, Norway’s Casper Ruud and Spain’s Rafael Nadal will represent Team Europe.
On the other hand, the Team World will consist of America’s Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul, Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur. The other members of the contingent will be announced soon. This will be the seventh edition of the competition. In the previous six editions, Team Europe had a clear advantage as they won on four occasions. However, Team World came out on top in the previous two editions. In 2023, they emerged victorious with a score of 13-2.
