Italy’s
Jannik Sinner is set to face a stern test from Spain’s
young tennis star
Carlos Alcaraz to keep the number one rank in men’s tennis. Both
players are already regarded as amongst the best in men’s tennis in the singles
category.
Sinner, who recently became the world number one, is now
facing a stern test of keeping the top spot with Alcaraz’s recent triumph. The
21-year-old, who started the season slowly, has now won back-to-back Grand
Slams after his recent triumph in London. He first won the French Open after
beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in a five-set thrilling contest with a score
of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2.
On the other hand, Sinner, who started the season brightly,
has slowed down a bit recently. He won the Australian Open
after beating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev with a score of 3–6, 3–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–3.
During the French Open, Sinner lost in the semifinal to Alcaraz in a five-set
thriller with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. At Wimbledon, the current
world number one lost to Medvedev in the quarterfinal in another five-set
thrilling contest with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
As per the latest report, Alcaraz, who is still the world
number three in the ranking behind Sinner and Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic, can still become the world number one as he has 2,170 points to
defend this year. On the other hand, Sinner has 3,370 points to defend in the
remainder of the campaign. Djokovic, on the other hand, who is having a tough
season both because of his form and fitness concerns, has more than 5,000
points to defend which makes it really difficult for him to claim the top spot.
As things stand, Sinner at the number one spot in
ATP rankings with 9,570
points, nearly 1,400 points more than Alcaraz.
