Roger Federer had a lot of influence on
Stan Wawrinka and his career overall which the younger Swiss player recognized.
Wawrinka and Federer shared some historic moments on the court as in Beijing in 2008 when they won the gold medal in doubles for Switzerland. They also teamed up to win the Davis Cup for Switzerland and that are some of the memories, Wawrinka mentioned when talking about Federer:
“I owe him a lot in my career. There were positive things. I grew and
improved thanks to him. He helped me a lot. Thanks to him, I won the
Olympic Games and the Davis Cup. Those are two of the biggest titles of
my career.”
He never had teh full spotlight on him becaues of Federer but he is fine with that:
“It’s sure that coming in behind him, especially in Switzerland, no
matter what results I had, it was always going to be light years behind
him anyway,” he said. No one can do what he did, at least not in Switzerland. What I do, I
do as well as I can. You have to be able to appreciate this kind of
career.”
