Three-time Grand Slam winner
Stan Wawrinka has become the
latest high-profile player to lambast that ATP board member Justin Gimelstob after
her was conviction for assaulting a player.
The 46-year-old has been handed a three-year probation and
60 days of community service by a judge in Los Angeles after he pleased ‘no
contest’ over charges of misdemeanour assault.
Wawrinka was recently quoted in a report where he stated
that Gimelstob should not keep his place after the recent verdict.
“Players need to speak out,” said the 38-year-old. “Justin
Gimelstob has been convicted of a violent assault. It simply can not be
possible for anyone to condone this type of behaviour and worse [yet] support
it.
“In any other business or sport we would not be discussing
this. The ATP council need to do something about this and finally end this
conversation and shameful period in our great sport.”
Earlier, for world number one Britain’s Andy Murray stated
in a similar manner. “I don’t see how, with everything that has gone on, it’s
possible for him to retain a position of authority or management at the ATP
right now.”
Murray’s former coach Amelie Mauresmo had also similar
opinion to share about the incident.
“He assaulted a guy, right, and he said he did it,” said Mauresmo.
“So, it’s pretty straightforward. I guess that’s not the kind of behaviour you
want to see from someone in our sport having a big role in any of these
[tennis] organisations.”
