Stan Wawrinka will try to receive a wild card entry into the
French Open despite the common practice that they usually get handed to native players or rising talents.
Wawrinka is a former French Open champion having won the event in 2015 and he is looking forward to competing at the event this year as well. He would ideally like to avoid the qualifications and he can do it in several ways. The most straightforward way is to get a wild card entry into the main draw and the Swiss player confirmed he will ask for it after his exit from Monte-Carlo.
Even so, Wawrinka is unsure whether he would get it saying:
"I only have nine protected rankings I can use and I want to keep them. But I'm sure I will, in the end, have to use my protected ranking because the wildcards will probably have to go to other players".
The 2nd option is to use his protected ranking put in place due to the pandemic as he was unable to play for the majority of the time the pandemic was in effect. He has also 9 chances to invoke that right and as he noted he would like to keep all of them intact but if doesn't get the wild card entry, he will use it to enter the main draw.
