After dismantling Team Europe at last year's edition of the Laver Cup, Team World appears ready for a repeat performance, according to Team World member Ben Shelton.
The Laver Cup is scheduled to run from September 20-22, 2024 in Berlin, with defending champion Team World feeling confident after an easy victory in 2023. Team World dominated last year's proceeding, securing a 13-2 victory in the international tennis competition. With both singles and doubles at play, players representing Team World and Team Europe will be selected based on their strengths and weaknesses.
"We want to win bad,” said the American. “We beat them down last year and they brought all the big guns to Berlin, so we’re excited for the challenge. We’re a pretty confident group and looking forward to it.
Furthermore, the former US Open semifinalist spoke on the camaraderie involved, and was grateful for any insight he obtained from watching the great players at work up close.
"It was special for me being a part of it for the first time the last year, getting the nod from John McEnroe,” said Shelton. "[It’s] just an iconic event that you’ve seen a lot of the top players in the sport be a part of, so to be a part of it and compete, feel that team energy and team atmosphere that I love so much, it’s been really cool for me and I’m excited again to be on the team this year.
"Some giants in our sport have had big moments in this event,” he said, referencing Roger Federer’s unforgettable retirement in London 2022. ”I’ll just be there, watching, observing, competing [and] having a lot of fun.”
