Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis started their US Open journey with a win but it was a complicated one that had them playing extra sets.
Taking on Gaston and Musetti, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis needed some time to find their groove as they dropped the opening set but rallied to win the next two and move on. Kokkinakis was not happy with the extra playing time knowing how much Kyrgios wants a deep run in the singles here:
"But the crowd's energy was great and I'm hoping he can go all the way in the singles and I'm backing him.
Kyrgios himself assured his mate that he has plenty of left saying:
"Honestly, I feel good. Physically I feel probably in the best shape I've been in in my career. After Wimbledon, playing for those two weeks and playing some gruelling five-set matches, I feel real good physically. Honestly, I'd rather do this than practise - and it's good money as well. It keeps my girlfriend happy."
He furthermore confirmed that they do want to win the event:
"We live to fight another day. We made it really tough for ourselves tonight but the crowd was electric. We definitely have aspirations to win the tournament. I'm just glad we're in the tournament after tonight."
