Serena Williams is back in the news after appearing in a Super Bowl advert ahead of the main showpiece. A lot of stick has come the 23-time Grand Slam champion's way, with
Holger Rune coming to the side of his fellow tennis player in a debate on social media.
After retiring, Williams has made it a clear goal to lose weight and become even fitter. This has been completed. She applied a GLP-1 receptor agonist medication. The telehealth company Ro provided it to her.
An advert for Ro was shown ahead of the Super Bowl. This received a mix of praise from fans who were supporting Williams for sharing a product that she had used with great affects. Others were not as supportive, going against her. One X user by the name of
Pavvy G went against Williams with a ruthless argument on the platform as they shared their views on the situation.
"One of the greatest athletes in the world is shamelessly now promoting weight loss drugs? I fear truly saddened by this, nobody should be encouraging people to take weight loss drugs, but especially a role model and icon of sport. I fear for the future."
Rune stands up for Williams
Rune is currently out of the sport after enduring a
nasty achilles injury in the 2025 Stockholm Open. He is not set to be back playing in the sport until later this year as he goes through a rigorous rehab process.
Taking some time off from his recovery process, he went on social media to share his thoughts. "Being overweight comes with a health risk, like alcohol, and seeking help to overcome personal challenges is always the right thing to do," Rune wrote. "I think it’s great that
Serena Williams doesn’t pretend it just happened overnight, but openly inform about what she did to achieve her personal goals in terms of her body. There is not one right or wrong way here, there is only the way that is good for you, and we should not shame on this."
Pavvy G argued back at the Dane: "Disagree mate, many of these weight loss injections come with many side effects too. Youngsters watching this ad will think they can simply use this instead of eating healthy, keeping fit and active. For an athlete to promote this is shocking and sends out so many bad messages."
Rune shared his trust in doctors, and that they know what they are on about. "It’s not something you buy on a pharmacy. It needs a doctor’s prescription. So it’s the doctors that evaluate if you are suited for this or not. We must have trust in the doctors, no?"
The X user was not on the same board. "Like we needed to trust the doctors when they told us all that you get the Covid vaccine? A few years laters some vaccines like Astra Zeneca were pulled from the market in the UK as it was tragically proved some people died/ very poorly from getting an adverse reaction from it."
Instead of continuing the debate, Rune called it a day and went on his with his day. "You can always find something matching your arguments. That’s the beauty of open discussions and different opinions. I must go back to my rehab work. Have a nice Monday."
It did end on a nice note, with Pavvy G wishing Rune well with his recovery. Rune regularly shares updates on his progress and is already back on court, slowly getting back to his full fitness ahead of a highly anticipated return to the sport.
