Former Italian player Paolo Bertolucci believes that it will
become clear in the next few months whether there is a decline in the performance
of the current world number one Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic.
The 36-year-old is often regarded as the greatest player in
the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won as many as
24 Grand Slam titles. Ten of those titles came while playing at the Australian
Open.
However, he was denied making it 11 in Melbourne this year as
he lost to Italy’s young tennis star Jannik Sinner who emerged victorious in
the semifinal with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
That defeat sparked the debate in the tennis world about the
possible decline of Djokovic who has been dominating the sport for large part
of the last decade.
Bertolucci was recently quoted in a report where he stated
that it will become clear between the events in Indian Wells and Miami whether
Djokovic is on a decline or not.
"He is a player who played badly in Australia," he
said. "Now if this is due to a problem that can happen, because it happens
when someone doesn't get his preparation right, or if the decline had begun, we
will find out between Indian Wells and Miami.
"We will see if
he has recovered or not. I have no ideas because we would have to have seen the
training sessions, understand if he stopped or not and with what intensity.
Only those who know that within the team."
