"We're supposed to be indestructible, undefeatable" - Venus Williams highlights importance of athletes speaking about mental health

Venus Williams is in favour of athletes peaking about their mental health as she thinks it will be beneficial to people from all walks of life.

Williams recently got involved with BetterHelp, an initiative with the goal of making professional therapy accessible, affordable, and convenient. In an interview with People magazine, she touched upon the subject explaining why it's important.

"We're supposed to be indestructible, undefeatable, super strength, almost like superheroes. But for athletes to share their stories of what they've gone through really helps people from all walks of life, and that's so important."

Williams also spoke about her mother Oracene Williams who actually encouraged her to take care of her mental health.

"My mom always told us that — you have to work on your mental strength. That was her theory of raising kids...you also have to help them mentally be ready and prepared."

And added:

"It's important to engage in therapy even before you might have something exactly to talk about, to work through and prepare yourself for anything that might come up in your life."
