Italy’s young tennis star
Jannik Sinner joined the elite list
of players who managed to beat the current world number one Serbia’s Novak
Djokovic twice in a week.
The 22-year-old achieved that milestone after securing
memorable wins over Serbia’s legendary tennis star in the
ATP Finals in
Turin and later in the
Davis Cup semifinal.
In the Finals, Sinner got the better of Djokovic in the
group match with a score of 7-5 6-7, 7-6. Later in the Davis Cup, he once again
defeated the Belgrade-born with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
By doing that, the current world number four joined just three
other players who achieved something similar against Djokovic at the highest
level. The first in the list features former Russian tennis player Mikhail
Youzhny.
The 41-year-old defeated Djokovic twice in a week back in
2007. First of his victory came at the Marseille Open where he emerged victorious
with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. Later at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam, he
secured another win over the 24-time Grand Slam winner with a score of 3-6, 7-6
(7), 7-5.
The second player in the list is Spain’s Rafael Nadal who
defeated Djokovic twice in 2008. First, he won the semifinal of the French Open and
then he secured another victory over the 36-year-old in the Queen’s Club
Championship.
In the same year, Britain’s Andy Murray also achieved a similar
feat. He defeated Djokovic in the Canada Masters and then later at the Cincinnati
Open.
