John McEnroe has long been a premier pundit for the BBC's Wimbledon coverage. But he has seen his salary vastly cut in new figures released by the BBC in the aftermath of the tournament in their yearly numbers.
The BBC is required to declare a list of salaries paid to people on and off-air who receive more than £178k in a year and McEnroe's name is not on said list for another year. This time for 2025-26. He began working on Wimbledon's coverage back in 2004 having hung up his racquet in 1992. He received criticism for this role in particular a few years ago when he didn't know who Nicolas Jarry was when he played Carlos Alcaraz.
But this was also shone into the spotlight given that he is paid a lot for two weeks of the year. In 2022-23, he earned between £205k-£209k. The year after this, he earned between £195k-£199k. Last year, he was not published in the annual report and this year is the same meaning that he very much isn't over that bracket or is close to but isn't there.
Albeit some would rather he not be on the coverage at all if you believe the conjecture online surrounding the tennis great. “If we have to keep suffering through John McEnroe commentary, can someone at least tell him how to pronounce Zverev’s freaking name?” said a fan on social media surrounding his coverage of the men's Wimbledon final.

Fans call for Agassi and McEnroe axe

Another was critical of him for using objectionable language on air. “@espn Please fire John McEnroe and ban him from all future tennis broadcasts because he cursed (the worst possible word on a Sunday) on air inexcusable @Wimbledon @BBC."
With Andrew Castle hanging up his microphone, he also came into the spotlight with others calling for Andre Agassi not to have a similar role to McEnroe. “Please @BBC, why oh why is Andre Agassi doing commentary @Wimbledon – great player, awful commentator…..please, not next year, terrible voice. #KeepAndrewCastle”, said the fan.

While another also wasn't a fan, but then said he wasn't as bad as McEnroe is. Pretty scathing for a commentator who albeit doesn't earn over the BBC threshold will still get a pretty penny for his coverage over the fortnight.
“Loved him as a player, but he’s boring as a commentator, but at least it’s not John McEnroe," another fan wrote.
