Carlos Alcaraz deciding not to play the Canadian Open in the coming weeks has now bearing on his injury in a positive update reported by Spanish media today.
Alcaraz's right wrist has fully healed and the Spanish tennis star will target a comeback at the
Cincinnati Open as per Spanish publication
La Verdad.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion who sustained severe tenosynovitis in his right wrist in mid-April confirmed last week that he would not play in Canada leading people to believe that he also wouldn't be playing in Cincinnati or even the US Open.
But he has put that to bed. He shared an injury update on Instagram after confirming he wouldn't play in Canada saying he'd returned to the practice court. Albeit fans noticed that he was wearing a wrist bandage and practicing with an unstrung racket frame. Combine this with his withdrawal from Montreal saw fans leading to think the worst.
Wrist fully heals
According to said report, he was examined by Angel Ruiz-Cotorro a doctor last Friday who confirmed that his wrist has fully healed. However after speaking to his team and medical staff, he decided to give himself more time, skip the Montreal section of the season and focus on returning in time for Cincinnati on August 13.
He is expected as per the same report to meet with Ruiz-Cotorro again this week and if everything goes well, he will receive the green light to return. Alcaraz has not played since April 14 after examinations saw him find out his injury was a lot more severe.
He withdrew from the remainder of the clay season before also confirming in May that he would miss the entire grass court swing. If everything goes to plan, it will mark his first tournament in four months and he would presumably also play in the US Open.
On a week where people have clamoured for his return, he is perhaps needed more than ever to return.
