Although former World No.1 Andy Murray has announced his intention to retire this season, rival Stan Wawrinka believes the British star will likely change his mind.
Following a poor performance in Dubai this February, Murray revealed he had plans to quite tennis later this year. However, the three-time Grand Slam champion did not give an exact date, although he did hint at it being after the summer.
“I’m likely not going to play past this summer," Murray told reporters after his match. "I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play. I’m bored of the question, to be honest. I’m not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop. But, yes, I don’t plan on playing much past this summer."
Three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka believes Murray fell victim to his emotions during that press conference, adding the British star still had a lot of passion for the game.
"It’s normal that we receive these questions," said the former World No.3 in an interview with Express Sport. "About him, I’m not sure that he’s going to stop this summer. I don’t think so but let’s see how it goes.
"I don’t think he will stop. I think when he announced stopping it’s a lot because of the emotion after losing a match but I’m not sure he will stop this summer. I think because he’s passionate about the game and I think of course he’s in a mixed feeling; when he’s winning or losing it’s not easy with the emotion. But I think as long as he’s passionate and feels competitive, he will keep going."
