The tennis calendar is moving towards its busiest phase when two Grand Slams and Olympic games will be played in the space of two months. The first mega-event will be the third Grand Slam of the year—Wimbledon 2024—which will start on July 1st. Players from all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the grand prize.
The men’s singles seeding for the mega-event has been announced, and there were no major surprises. The seedings were done according to the latest ATP rankings announced on Monday. Italy’s young tennis star Jannik Sinner will be the top seed in the competition for the first time in his career. The 22-year-old has recently become the world number one, replacing Serbia’s Novak Djokovic at the top of the ATP rankings.
The 37-year-old, who is currently spending time on the sidelines after undergoing surgery to recover from a knee injury, is seeded second. Spain’s young tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, who recently won the French Open after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, has been seeded third.
The 21-year-old, who will be defending his title in this year’s competition, recently lost his number two spot in the ATP ranking after being knocked out of the Queen’s Championship following a defeat to Britain’s Jack Draper in the round of 16. The development means that Alcaraz and Sinner are likely to face off in the seminal of the competition, which could turn out to be the most mouthwatering contest.
Both players are already regarded as two of the best in men’s tennis in the singles category. In professional tennis, both have faced off nine times where Alcaraz has a slight edge with five wins compared to Sinners’ four victories.
In 2024, the two faced off twice and on both occasions, the Spaniard came out on top. Their first meeting was during the Indian Wells semifinal, where the current world number three came out on top with a score of 1-6 6-3 6-2. Their most recent meeting was in the semifinal of the French Open where once again Alcaraz came out on top in a five-set thriller with a score of 2-6 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-3.
