Welcome to Winner’s Circle, a segment where we review each winner of every ATP and WTA tournament during the truncated 2020 season.

This edition features Casper Ruud's amazing run, as he creates history by becoming the first Norwegian player to win a title on the ATP tour.

Argentina Open
Winner: Casper Ruud

After a disappointing start to the 2020 season, the 21-year old Ruud was hoping to make his mark in Buenos Aires. Seeded eighth, Ruud defeated Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar 6-2 6-3 in the opening round. The Norwegian then made quick work of Roberto Carballes Baena, 6-1 6-0 to take a 2-0 career lead against the Spaniard.
Facing third seed Dusan Lajovic in the quarterfinals, Ruud overcame a sluggish start to defeat the Serbian 7-5 6-1. With other top seeds falling in the second round, Argentine Diego Schwartzman was the only seeded player left in the draw. The top seed had in fact saved four match points against Pablo Cuevas in an exhausting three hour and forty minutes quarterfinal match.
Perhaps the marathon encounter had taken it's toll on Schwartzman, as the Argentine was forced to withdraw from the semifinals due to a leg injury. Conversely, Ruud faced Argentina's Juan Ignacio Londero in a thrilling semifinal encounter. With the crowd behind their hero, the Norwegian dropped the first set but was able to recover and will himself to victory. Ruud triumphed 4-6 7-5 6-1 and advanced to his second career ATP final (Houston 2019).
Standing between Ruud and his first ATP trophy was lucky loser Pedro Sousa. The Portuguese journeyman had a walkover victory in the semifinals due to Schwartzman pulling out of the tournament. Nonetheless, he did not fare well against Ruud, as the Norwegian controlled play from the baseline. Ruud prevailed 6-1 6-4 and lifted his first ATP trophy.
Ruud would rise 11 spots to a career high of World No.34 on the ATP rankings, becoming the highest-ranked Norwegian ever and the first to win an ATP title.
