Casper Ruud had a tremendous week at the San Diego Open where he lifted the trophy after beating Cameron Norrie in the final. One special tennis legend was in attendance watching the match AND similar to the last time Rod Laver watched Ruud play, the Norwegian was almost unplayable. The first time Laver watched Ruud play was at the Laver Cup when he comfortably took down Reilly Opelka.
One week later he watched the San Diego Open final and Ruud was even more impressive. After the match he thanked Laver in his speech:
“Special thanks to Rod [Laver] obviously, the legend. I
think you need to come to all my matches now, because I’m playing really
well when you come and watch [me play]. I hope you come to Indian Wells
next week to watch. So, let’s see.”
Ruud has many fond memories of anything related to Rod Laver as the best result he ever achieved at a grand slam was at the Australian Open this year when he reached the 4th round. He lost to Andrey Rublev but they played a very good match at the Rod Laver Arena.
