Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz earlier today faced off in the semi-finals of the 2024 French Open and at times, it was a pretty drab affair which saw them flatter to deceive.
It saw the notion thrown around that the injured Novak Djokovic or current Rafael Nadal could beat them. But commentator and brother of John, Patrick McEnroe took to X/Twitter to call it out as nonsense.
Djokovic has recently had surgery for a meniscus tear and looks likely to be out until Hamburg just prior to the Olympic Games. Whilst Nadal lost out in the first round to Alexander Zverev at the 2024 French Open. But it saw some people throw around the notion that both of the lesser versions of these top stars could've beaten the duo today.
Albeit many including McEnroe himself were left puzzled and frustrated by this notion. In the end, Alcaraz ended up defeating Jannik Sinner to reach the final where he will take on Alexander Zverev on Sunday.
"Please…Enough with the nonsense on here that current Rafa or an injured Novak would beat Sinner/Alcaraz easily today…You really have absolutely ZERO CLUE," said McEnroe.
Djokovic fans in particular said that the current World No.1 would've done. "A bit defensive aren’t we Patrick? Can’t deny the match was of poor quality. Glad Carlos won, but if Novak hadn’t torn his meniscus he definitely would have had a good chance at making the final & winning," one wrote.
While others agreed with the notion that McEnroe was portraying. "Current Rafa or injured Djoker would lose easily to either…" another wrote. Whilst another took aim at Alcaraz in particular. "I intensely dislike how Alcaraz celebrates his wins. I find it so disrespectful to his opponents. The cupping of his ear for applause and fist pumps is cringe worthy."
