Following his upset victory over World No.3 Alexander Zverev at the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells on Sunday, Tommy Paul is hoping to use the win as a confidence booster for the rest of the tournament and 2022 season.
The American recorded the biggest win of his career when he pulled off the 6-2 4-6 7-6(2). advancing to the third round at Indian Wells for the second time.
"I like playing here," said Paul after the match. "I like the conditions. The fans really support [the American players] here, and that’s why we all love it. It feels like a real home tournament.”
Paul defeated then-World No.5 Andrey Rublev before reaching the fourth round last year in California, his best performance at an ATP Masters event. The World No.39 hopes to reproduce such victories over Top 10 players, in an attempt to climb up the ATP rankings.
“I would hope that I can be in the Top 10," said Paul. "That’s what it takes, you’ve got to beat more Top 10 players and I played well today, so I’m happy.”
