The first match of the day at the
Laver Cup was a doubles match between Zverev & Rublev and Opelka & Shapovalov 6-2 6-7(4) 10-3.
The European duo completed the job with a straight-set win over their rivals ensuring that Team Europe wins the 2021 Laver Cup. Team Europe now has a 14-1 lead against Team World which ensures them the win mathematically despite 3 matches still left to be played. This match was a straightforward one for Team Europe.
Both Rublev and Zverev have extensive doubles experience while Opelka and Shapovalov do not and it showed early. The European duo was simply more comfortable on the court and a lot sharper both serving and returning and they quickly won the opening set 6-2.
Opelka and Shapovalov were too vulnerable on their 2nd serve as Rublev and Zverev returned extremely well. The European duo also saved the only break point they faced while converting 1 of 3 they had. In the 2nd set, the North American duo raised their level especially on serve and they saved two crucial early set break points to keep them in the match.
On return they barely had any chances as Zverev and Rublev were simply too dominant when serving. We ended up in a tiebreak and in it, it was Opelka and Shapovalov who were better winning it 7-4. Their serve worked to perfection in the tiebreak and Rublev and Zverev had no chance. In the match tiebreak, Zverev and Rublev completely took over.
They returned great and Opelka and Shapovalov could not handle the pressure falling behind 2-6 rather quickly. Team Europe would close it out with 10-3 to secure the needed points for Europe to clinch the victory.
