Alexander
Zverev comfortably defeated
Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-4, advancing to the
quarterfinals of the ATP 500
Vienna Open.
The German
tennis star had experienced a dip in form in recent weeks. After winning the
Chengdu Open and reaching the semifinals of the China Open,
Alexander Zverev
suffered three consecutive losses for the first time in the season.
Following
the bittersweet Asian season, Zverev returned to Europe to compete in the ATP
500 Vienna Open, where he once again showcased a high level of play. He easily
secured a victory in the first round against Sebastian Ofner (6-4, 6-1) and
repeated this feat against the world No. 18, Cameron Norrie, without
encountering any significant issues.
Norrie had
won his first-round match against the local Filip Misolic (7-6, 4-6, 6-3),
overcoming a challenging Asian season where he had endured one win and four
consecutive losses.
Zverev held
a 3-0 advantage in their head-to-head encounters, all on hardcourts, and he
hadn't dropped a set to Norrie. Once again, Zverev dominated, starting the
match at a high level.
The first
game of the match resulted in a break for Zverev, who then comfortably held his
serve. Zverev secured another break in the fifth game and successfully overcame
a 0-40 deficit on his serve to maintain his lead. He comfortably won the first
set 6-2 in just 37 minutes of play.
In the
second set, Zverev accelerated once again, securing a break in the third game,
allowing him to take the lead quicklyThe former world No. 2 successfully
defended his service for the rest of the set and did not give his opponent any
chances to reverse the score and close out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
In the
quarterfinals, Zverev awaits confirmation of his opponent, who will emerge from
the match between the third seed, Andrey Rublev (ranked 5th), and Matteo
Arnaldi (ranked 41st). Zverev also maintains his 7th position in the Race
standings, accumulating points to secure his spot in the ATP Finals.
