The ABN AMRO Open continues this afternoon with top seed Carlos Alcaraz set to start his campaign but it is Alex de Minaur who set out an early stall with a thumping 6-2, 6-4 win over David Goffin.

Last year's finalist who has a 6-0 record against David Goffin showed every inch of that deft touch again and he extended his run to 30 wins in ATP 500 tournaments since 2023.

Only Jannik Sinner with two more has more so he could seal that top spot this week. It was superb both and could be akin to a chess match with De Minaur pulling out the King to ultimately wipe away the rook. He broke early and went 4-1 up in double quick time with his serve in particular providing a real weapon of choice. He barely lost a point on serve and sealed the opener 6-2.

The war of attrition was more close in the second but De Minaur picked his moments including breaking at 3-3 as he closed in on the win. Next up is Jakub Mensik who took down Alexander Bublik this afternoon in a popcorn tie.

Also in their quarter is Stefanos Tsitsipas who faces the winner of Matteo Berrettini or Tallon Griekspoor or Daniil Medvedev who faces Matteo Bellucci. Jiri Lehecka is the other winner thus far.

He saw off Alexei Popyrin in one of the top first round ties earlier today 7-5, 6-2. Andrey Rublev is currently starting against Zhizhen Zhang. While Alcaraz and Holger Rune flank the afternoon.

But De Minaur as second seed has certainly made an early statement in Rotterdam to begin the week. A player constantly on the rise and with no Sinner to thwart him could be a sleeper favourite this week with Alcaraz perhaps not at his best.
