ATP Finals: Masterful Jannik Sinner downs Taylor Fritz, inches closer to semifinals

Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 and has nearly secured his spot in the semifinals. The world No. 1 delivered another dominant performance, needing just two breaks to overcome the American No. 1 in their rematch since the US Open final a few months ago.

While Sinner entered focused as usual, Fritz looked a bit frustrated early on, struggling to hold his first service game. The Italian won 12 of his first service games, consistently keeping pressure on Fritz, who managed to win 63% of points on his serve but struggled with a poor 27% on his second serve.

The American had a single break opportunity in the 7th game but couldn’t convert. Later, he survived a 0-40 situation, though Sinner’s break seemed closer with each game. The Italian—2-time Grand Slam champion—secured the break in the 10th game and took the first set 6-4.

In the second set, Fritz started with more confidence in his service, though Sinner remained relentless. The world No. 5 saved a break point in the 6th game and managed to stay in the game until 4-4. As in the first set, when Fritz felt the pressure, he lacked the consistency to hold on. Sinner took the break and closed the match 6-4, 6-4, virtually securing his qualification.

In his final Round Robin match, Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev, who urgently needs a win to advance. The Italian’s strong game differential and two wins make his semifinal spot nearly certain, though he is not yet mathematically qualified. He could only be eliminated if he loses to Medvedev by a large game margin and Fritz secures a similarly large victory against Alex De Minaur.
