Alexander Zverev defeated Andrey Rublev, kicking off his quest for a semifinal spot with a strong start. The world No. 2 was almost flawless on serve and capitalized on his only two break opportunities to secure a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
In Novak Djokovic’s absence, the German is the most experienced player in the tournament, with 7 appearances (record 15-9) and titles in 2018 and 2021. With this win, Zverev matches Jannik Sinner’s 66 wins this season and puts himself in a strong position to advance to the semifinals.
Both players started powerfully, with Rublev slightly more dominant on serve, winning his first 13 service points consecutively. However, Rublev showed his first weaknesses in the seventh game, where one break point was enough for Zverev to take the lead. The world No. 2 maintained his intensity, achieving 78% of points won on his first serve and 75% on his second before closing out the set 6-4.
In the second set, Zverev was even stronger on serve, rarely conceding points on his own games. Like in the first set, Rublev stayed solid for much of the set, keeping things even at 4-4 and winning 65% of his service points, though only 17% on return.
The Russian, world No. 8, couldn’t keep up with Zverev, who once again took his first break chance to pave the way to victory. The world No. 2 didn’t falter on serve, sealing the 6-4, 6-4 win in 73 minutes and beginning his ATP Finals campaign on a high note.
Zverev’s next challenge will be against Casper Ruud, who surprised four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in his opening match. The Norwegian will look to deliver another upset and secure a spot in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Rublev will face Alcaraz, with both players needing a win to stay alive in the Round Robin.
