Coco Gauff pulled a late surge out of the fire as she took down Jodie Burrage 6-3, 7-5 to reach the third round of the 2025 Australian Open on Wednesday.
Late into the night, Gauff who is usually adept to playing during the afternoon at Grand Slams took Centre Stage for this one as she faced off against Burrage who herself is a story of resilience returning after injury troubles to play in Melbourne and reaching the second round.
But that was all she wrote for the Brit as Gauff despite going 3-5 down in the second set managed to win four games on the spin to seal the win and dent any chance that Burrage had of mounting a comeback.
In fact it was initially on Gauff's racquet over Burrage's as she went 3-1 up in the second set but Burrage fought back valiantly to 3-3 and then took the lead breaking serve and going 5-3 up. But in the end, it was a comeback in vain as Gauff sealed the win.
It is now 16 consecutive sets won for Gauff and after winning the United Cup with the USA to start her season, she sits on 7-0 for this year. It is 20 out of the last 22 matches as she continues to play herself into form when it matters the most and given that Zheng Qinwen is now out, it is a roadblock she won't navigate so no doubt the American will have some added confidence after also dodging a tough task in Burrage.
Next up is a rising talent at one point that shone so brightly in Leylah Fernandez who still has a good performance in her. But the big test will be Gauff. Then it could feasibly be Naomi Osaka or Belinda Bencic in the battle of the comeback queens. Siegemund or Pavlyuchenkova perhaps above as like alluded to Zheng Qinwen is now gone son very much looking good for the top American.
