Emma Raducanu certainly can't catch a break at the moment it seems with the former US Open champion losing her coach last week and also now losing in her opener at the Singapore Tennis Open.
Raducanu lost out to Cristina Bucsa in three sets on Monday morning. It was a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 win for the Spaniard who joins Maya Joint, Ann Li and Camila Osorio in the second round. Anna Kalinskaya will hope not to follow the same fate as Emma Raducanu when she plays later this morning against Caroline Dolehide.
But when it came to the Brit, she was up a set and a break in the third set and won one out of 13 second serve points in the decider which proved to be vital in helping Bucsa over the line. Holding her serve proved tricky as when going 3-1 up, Bucsa broke straight back and then again for the winner to go 4-3 up.
Raducanu managed to hit back but was broken at 5-5 when it looked likely to go towards a tie-break and despite having to go through three match points to achieve it, Bucsa got over the line.
Next up will be Mananchaya Sawangkaew or Siljia Wei who are facing off currently with the former a set up. The winner then faces the section with Kalinskaya as she takes on Dolehide and Ajla Tomljanovic also sits awaiting the winner potentially.
Second seed Elise Mertens opens up against Taylor Townsend but that part of the draw won't take precedence it seems with the latter just winning the Australian Open doubles title so a mad dash to Singapore will have to happen but not as much as to Linz for Siniakova who also triumphed.
For Raducanu, it is back to the drawing board and quick. She would've wanted a run this week to get some wins on the board but instead is facing an all too familiar scenario of an early loss.
