Last year's finalists Australia won't take any further part in this year's United Cup bowing out despite beating Great Britain in the end as Czechia find their way into the Quarter-Finals as the lucky loser of sorts.

Australia defeated Great Britain 2-1 on Wednesday evening but Great Britain are through as was confirmed ironically with Katie Boulter, fiance of Alex de Minaur beating Olivia Gadecki earlier today. So in the end it was one of the power couple that doused the hopes of the other.

All three countries in Group F in Great Britain, Australia and Argentina finished with a 1-1 record and had each won three matches. But Great Britain finished in top spot by winning the greatest percentage of sets. This meant Australia and Argentina were eliminated.

Great Britain face a tough tie though as they face Iga Swiatek's Poland on Thursday evening. Czechia will face Italy on Friday with the semi-final then on Saturday with the USA.

Alex de Minaur did what he could. He earned a resounding 6-2, 6-1 win over Billy Harris to send the tie into a deciding match and keep the hopes of his country alive. But De Minaur and Olivia Gadecki did not beat Charles Broom and Olivia Nicholls by a wide enough margin to claim the Quarter-Final spot.

Even so De Minaur and Gadecki triumphed 6-3, 7-6 to end the group stage on a high. “It was great. I enjoyed every second we had here on this Sydney court,” De Minaur said. “I enjoyed playing mixed with Liv a lot. It was a lot of fun, great atmosphere, thank you guys. We did our best. As I said, always a pleasure to play at home.”

Gadecki said: “I’m so glad I got to share the court with Alex tonight. It was such a pleasure and I knew I had to step up.”

After such a thrilling final last year between Germany and Australia, both miss out. The former with Alexander Zverev's injury, the latter by a mere small amount of sets. USA and Poland though will remain the favouries.
