United Cup 2025: Terrific Tomas Machac powers Czech Republic into USA semi-final showdown

Tomas Machac did as his teammate Karolina Muchova did and led from the front in a rampant thrashing of Italy in the 2025 United Cup Quarter-Finals. The pair of Czech's raced past the top talents from the current Billie Jean King and Davis Cup Finals champions to some tune.

They dropped just seven games as Machac who had the task of completing the feat after Karolina Muchova thrashed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-2 added to that by defeating Flavio Cobolli in even more rampant fashion 6-1, 6-2.

Machac is the highest ranked Czech and showed that whilst Muchova gets the plaudits and sometimes rightfully so that he can anchor the team also. He has only lost to Casper Ruud thus far and beat Hubert Hurkacz in three sets in his other singles match.

“I think this kind of tennis is the highest that I can play,” 25th-ranked Machac said. “I was surprised how I played, without any mistakes.

“I know I can play my best tennis against the best ones,” he added. “I was just trying to focus, and when I saw how the match was going I was just trying to stay as long as I can mentally on the court.”

Next up in sealing the win, they've punched a ticket to face off against USA in the semi-finals of the United Cup which also means we get a clash between Muchova and Gauff which is bound to provide some standout tennis.

Whilst Italy have in fact missed the brilliance of Sinner, Berrettini and Musetti, they bow out in surprise fashion to Czech Republic who were mooted as a real one to watch and showed why thus far especially with Muchova at her best and with Machac also firing.
