Tennis fans in the United Kingdom may have welcomed in the New Year with freezing below minus conditions at points, but things will certainly look warmer as they tune into the 2025 Australian Open action and like normal, the annual showpiece event is already full of major headlines and potential 'what if' stories that could lead to very historic and memorable moments.

Naturally the media are all over this, and the Betway blog is back up and running for the tournament with their own unique coverage and insights, and this time around they have tasked former tennis star Andy Roddick to be in the hot seat and pass on his thoughts given his wide and varied experiences on the court.

The now 42 year old right hander has plenty of topics that he can dip into over the next few weeks and they range from the performance of Jannik Sinner who is in action, despite the cloud of the WADA case still looming large over his head and it potentially being the last time fans will see him for the next six to 12 months, or there is Novak Djokovic, now coached by Andy Murray, who has claimed he was poisoned when he was under immigration detention in a hotel during Covid.

Or maybe he will talk about Emma Raducanu who is looking to get her own star back on the rise following her injury issues and she has been welcomed to Australia this year in novel style by their famously hostile wildlife as she has already been bitten by 'jumping ants' and suffered a small allergic reaction.

As the games progress other issues will arise that no one saw coming, but for now as he previews the action that is to come, he cannot see past 23 year old Italian Sinner when it comes to the winner of the first Men's Grand Slam of the year, and put simply one of his reasons for that are the consistency issues that Carlos Alcaraz continues to suffer from.

"Jannik Sinner is the favourite in the Men’s, and he’s the person that I think will win. Will he dominate the year like he did in 2024? I think Sinner’s the one to beat in Australia, and I certainly wouldn’t bet against him. Carlos Alcaraz is his closest rival, but everyone knows he needs to find more consistency, and he’s not saying anything different."

Roddick went on the joke that he had been a bit of a 'dummy' thinking that tennis would suffer a bit of a dip in talent following the end of the 'one namers' like Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Serena and Venus Williams but with talent rising to the top on the Men's side, it is no different on the Women's side either with the likes of Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka making their own strides forward and beginning to fill the void.

Whilst fans know what to expect from many of the names that will be on show over the next couple of weeks, it will be interesting to see whether or not a newer name can steal the spotlight and create some major headlines of their own, but for now we can just sit back and enjoy what's on show, and with Nick Krygio's returning to action after his own lengthy injury issues, there is bound to be a show it just might not be of the tennis variety!
