Tennis fans react with shock to stars' pickleball visit
Pickleball was invented in the 1960s as a children's backyard game in the USA. It is similar to tennis in that it is a game in which two or four players hit a ball back-and-forth across a court and over a net. However, the sport has it's own rules and dimensions.
For example, players hit a perforated, hollow ball made of plastic that produces less bounce than tennis balls. Moreover, paddles are often used rather than rackets. Pickleball has been voted the fastest-growing sport in the US for the last three years, and now has two professional tours and one professional league, as well as thousands of tournaments across the United States.
However, several tennis fans have expressed their dislike of the sport, saying it takes away from tennis in terms of attention and energy.
Therefore, some reacted with shock and disappointment when a picture emerged on the Major League Pickleball Instagram story of the famous players making an appearance at the event.
"This is traumatic don’t they realize they’re undercutting their own sport," wrote one Reddit user.
"They all look so dead inside in the photo lol, like Carlos is bowing his head in shame and Holger just has a blank stare in all the pictures," added another.
"My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined!" commented a third.
