The Open era began in 1968, but several tennis players were dominating the courts long before. Bill Tilden and Richard Sears, for example, collectively played between 1881 and 1929. 

Tilden and Sears lead all Men’s Singles players with total US Open titles, each recording seven victories at this tournament. Sears was the inaugural winner, posting seven consecutive wins between 1881 and 1887.

Despite having four US Open wins, the 38-year-old Serbian struggled to maintain his endurance against Alcaraz, signaling a potential changing of the guard. Djokovic commented on the inability to win a set, giving credit to his opponent, as well as World No. 2, Jannik Sinner, who just lost to Alcaraz in the 2025 US Open Championship. 

“I lost three out of four Slams in semis against these guys, so they’re just too good, playing on a really high level. Unfortunately, I ran out of gas after the second set,” said Djokovic. He’d go on to say, “That’s kind of what I felt like this year, also with Jannik. Williams is the most famous of these three multi-US Open champions. She also has the most recent titles, winning in 1999, 2002, 2008, and ending with a three-year run from 2012 through 2014. 

There’s a new generation of stars in tennis. Alcaraz, who reclaimed his World No. 1 title with a 3-1 win over Sinner in the 2025 Men’s Singles US Open Championship match on Sunday, is still only 22 years old. It was the Spaniard’s second US Open win, while Sinner won his first US Open title in 2024 at 23 years old. 

Sabalenka is 27 years old and is currently in her prime, winning straight sets in both US Open Championship matches. 2023 winner, Coco Gauff, is still just 21 years old, while 2022 champion, Iga Swiatek, is still under the age of 25.
