The fourth round continues at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships on Monday, 8 July, with the schedule/order of play now confirmed for Day Eight in SW19.
Our preview looks ahead to the action as usual with Elena Rybakina, Danielle Collins, Novak Djokovic, Holger Rune, and Taylor Fritz against Alexander Zverev, among other great stars who will complete the list of quarterfinalists in both the men's and women's draws.
The 7-time champion Novak Djokovic will face a tough challenge against the 15th seed Holger Rune. The Dane has previously reached the quarterfinals in SW19 and knows what it is like to defeat Nole in important stages, such as the Paris Masters final in 2022. Rune will come in with high confidence after an incredible comeback against Quentin Halys, rallying from two sets down. However, he will need to play at his best from the start against the Serbian.
Another intriguing match in the men's draw is the American No. 1 Taylor Fritz, who will face Zverev for the 9th time in his career, with a head-to-head record favoring the German 5-3. A high-level duel is expected, considering their two previous encounters at Wimbledon, both victories for Zverev. However, this year Fritz seems more comfortable than ever on grass courts, following seven consecutive wins on the surface, including the Eastbourne International title two weeks ago.
The 9th seed Alex De Minaur had a fortunate pass to the round of 16 after Lucas Pouille's retirement before their previous round match. The Australian has two straight-set victories and will be favored against the young star Arthur Fils, who is looking to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Finally, the 25th seed Lorenzo Musetti will face the tournament surprise Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, one of the big winners of the grass swing. The Frenchman will turn 21 on Monday, already has an ATP title at the Lyon Open two months ago, and has recorded notable wins on grass, including over Ben Shelton at Queen's and Sebastian Korda at Wimbledon.
The 2022 champion Elena Rybakina had an extraordinary performance in the last round against former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, defeating her 6-0, 6-1, making her a strong contender. She will face an inspired Anna Kalinskaya, who won her first matches at Wimbledon and aims to reach the quarterfinals for the second time in a Grand Slam, the first being at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Meanwhile, American Danielle Collins secured a comfortable victory against the 20th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets. Still without dropping a set, she will be favored against the 31st seed Barbora Krejcikova, who has struggled in recent months but seems to have found new life at Wimbledon. The Czech won their only previous encounter in 2023.
The surprising Yulia Putintseva, who recently eliminated Iga Swiatek, will challenge former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in a draw section that appears wide open with the early exits of favorites Swiatek and Vondrousova. Ostapenko has probably been the most consistent player, dominating her opponents with victories over Tomljanovic (6-1, 6-2), Snigur (6-3, 6-0), and Pera (6-1, 6-3) before facing Putintseva.
Finally, Elina Svitolina (21st seed) will face China's Xinyu Wang. The Ukrainian recently eliminated 2-time runner-up Ons Jabeur in a close match and will be favored against the rising Asian player, who seeks her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
