Borna Gojo has spoken about the electric atmosphere at the
US Open, as well as trash-talking in the sport and his potential clash with
Novak Djokovic in New York.
Gojo has been having a dream run so far playing in the last Grand Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows. Coming into the tournament, the Croatian had only won one main draw match in his career.
However, after successfully making it through qualifiers he reached the third round of the major. Along the way, the world No. 114 defeated Hugo Dellien and Mackenzie McDonald.
Gojo wants more noise and trash-talking in tennis
In an interview with
Tennis Majors, Gojo said that he wishes crowds were able to make more noise at
ATP and
WTA tournaments, and expressed his approval of trash-talking.
"I don’t mind the noise. I played college tennis, so for me it’s always – the crazier, the better. I am used to it. I like it when the atmosphere gets a bit tense, because tennis is an extremely boring sport. As a spectator – you have to stay silent… I would change that, look at the other sports. I come watch Hajduk (football team from his hometown) play and I have to stay silent? Come on!
"I feel tennis is a dying product and that we need more of that. I would change all the rules! [...] I would love if the players were allowed a shoulder bump or trash talk, a bit of provocation. We don’t have to fight, but I would like to be able to say something to my opponent. The way things are now – I say something and they call the police instantly, it’s so rigid," he said.
Gojo on potential clash with Djokovic in fourth round
The 25-year-old also opened up on a potential fourth-round clash with 23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic. This is if Gojo makes it past his third-round match against
Jiri Vesely.
"My head is burned from the sun, I don’t even know who am I playing next [Jiry Vesely]. In case I do play Novak, it would be an amazing opportunity," he said.
