Coco Gauff's coach,
Brad Gilbert,
has called for a format change for the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The American shared on X his opinion about a new format for Olympic tennis that
would resemble the Grand Slam structure.
The 62-year-old suggested that the
men's gold medal match should be played over five sets, as in the Grand Slams,
and proposed eliminating the match tie-break in the third set for doubles
matches.
Gilbert calls for format change at
LA 2028
The conclusion of the Olympic Games
saw Novak Djokovic and Zheng Qinwen emerge as the new gold medalists after
Paris 2024. The format in the Olympic Games has evolved over the years, and
Brad Gilbert hopes to return to five-set finals in the men's Olympic final.
The final in Beijing 2008 was a
five-set match, although Rafael Nadal secured the victory over Fernando
Gonzalez in straight sets. Previously, in 2004, was the last time an Olympic
final went to five sets when Nicolas Massu triumphed over Mardy Fish.
Coco Gauff's coach proposed some
changes for Olympic tennis on X: "A few changes I would make for 28 LA
Olympics, all medal matches in doubles play the 3rd out no match TB, the men’s
gold medal match absolutely should be B05," Gilbert wrote.
