Former coach of both Andre Agassi and Coco Gauff, Brad Gilbert has confirmed a diagnosis of skin cancer as he sent his followers on social media platform X a message albeit with reassurance.
Gilbert has been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a common but treatable form of skin cancer. Spending the last few decades coaching, he finds himself outside a lot and he said that skin health is big as a result and is something he neglected.
He was previously also as high as World No.4 in the ATP Rankings in 1990. After retiring in 1995, he transitioned into coaching which saw him guide Agassi and Andy Roddick among others but with this came long prolonged stints in the sun which is a known risk for skin cancer.
Albeit this form of skin cancer whilst still being cancer is the most common and is less aggressive and highly treatable. He said that he would undergo a procedure on the 19th to remove the cancer and that it was good news that it wasn't worse.
He also like alluded to reminded his followers to go and see a dermatologist if they spend a lot of time outdoors like he does usually.
"Good news, and maybe good news, got my call back from the doctor. It's not a melanoma, it's just a basal cell," Gilbert said.
"I'm gonna keep reminding everybody, make sure you go see the dermatologist in the next few months. If you've been outside, don't neglect it," he added.
Gilbert coached Coco Gauff last until after the US Open when they split as she lost for the second major running to Emma Navarro. Since then Gauff won the WTA Finals with new coach Matt Daly as she continues working on her serve which has proven to be a deadly weapon when on but also an achilles heel when off. It is a partnership that has paid dividends though thus far.
