Sky Sports will take over from Amazon Prime Video in 2024 as coverage shifts for both ATP and WTA tournaments after a long stint for the streaming platform. But there was controversy in the announcement both on the poster, as well as the changes it brings for customers.
As expected as a British broadcaster, Andy Murray, Emma Raducanu, and Katie Boulter among others are prevalent with six UK players, but there was a notable omission that got fans questioning on social media.
That being current World No.2 and up to recently the top player in the WTA Rankings,
Aryna Sabalenka who was omitted as well as the top Russian stars
Daniil Medvedev and
Andrey Rublev who are also not on the poster. Questions also arose about Iga Swiatek who is the current World No.1 only being a footnote on the poster compared to a one-time Grand Slam champion in Coco Gauff.
As well as making Gauff and Carlos Alcaraz larger on the poster than both Swiatek and even Novak Djokovic, the current World No.1 and 24-time Grand Slam champion in a similar criticism to the Wimbledon branding which received heavy backlash.
The Amazon model in itself proved popular with tennis fans as they paid alongside their Prime subscription for the platform and could watch every match and replays. But fans were also left wondering whether this would be the case and also weren't best pleased at a potential price increase.
Sky Sports has long been mooted as the new home of tennis in the UK, with the US Open being showcased this season for the first time. It has now been confirmed that it will be the long-term home for both tours.
