Gabriela Dabrowski as World No.7 in doubles is of course used to working in a team and has been working to help others during time away from the court in lockdown.
Dabrowski said that tennis has become quite secondary in this time off as she has been helping as an ambassador for the Special Olympics and in her usual role on the WTA Player Council. The Canadian said as well that this will continue when she returns to action.
“I’d rather work on staying in shape,” Dabrowski said to
wtatennis.com. “And I have a course that I’m working on with school, and then the WTA Player Council responsibilities… Tennis is kind of on the back burner right now.”
“Obviously some of the things that we’d planned on doing couldn’t happen because of the tournaments not happening,” Dabrowski continued.
“There are tournaments like in Washington DC, the Citi Open, or in Charleston, at the Volvo Car Open where we have the kids [from each local Special Olympics chapter] come and play. If I was at any of those tournaments, I would definitely be involved with any of the on-site initiatives that they’ve got going on there.
“And I was actually told that last year at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen they helped to establish a Special Olympics tennis program at a school… I hope that they continue with these initiatives because I think they’re awesome.”
